How did you come up with the idea? This is what I am asked most often. Here is what happened. One evening I was laying in bed talking with my daughter who was out of town and feeling homesick, I was missing her. She asked what I had been doing and I said vacuuming up dog hair, a pretty standard task around here because we are the founders of Furever Home Animal Rescue. 

I mentioned to my daughter that strangely my Dyson handheld, which the kids bought me last Christmas and I keep very clean, was half filled with junk when I went to use it. I knew my daughter had no reason to use my personal vacuum because she has her own in her room! Turned out she did have a reason to use mine! She giggled snd admitted she had used my vacuum to clean her vacuum! Of course I was impressed with her ingenuity and still I thought to myself, there has to be a better way! 

We said good night. As I lay there trying to go to sleep, remembering times of me digging that crap out of my vacuum using a butter knife, a design of a tool that would safely and easily ease thet stuff out of the canister of the vacuum and into the waste bin started to develop. 

The next day I started melding items I found around the house together to get an idea of the dimensions. The blade needed ro be 3” long and no more than an inch wide. It needed to wrap around the canister to move smoothly and have some way to grab the debris. I designed my first rendition using part of a coat hanger and cut out pieces I molded from a plastic bottle! We had our basic shape and dimensions down but it looked like reused junk! I wanted it to look like the functional art it was going to fix! I have always been into functional art which was part of why I chose the Dyson in the first place. The machine is beautiful to look at. I wanted the Vac Daddy Wand to be equally beautiful and functional. 

I then went looking for the right material. At first I landed on some poly resins because they can have a tendency to hold electromagnetic cling, why your clothes stick to you. I thought this would be great for getting the stuff out. I made several prototypes using different variations. We were not getting the strength we needed and not really generating any static cling anyway. I wanted it to look kind of like it had been carved out of ice. I met over the phone with many materials specialist all over the world for discussions. It was interesting discussing materials without ever giving away what I was actually building. The Vac Daddy came to be known as a back scratcher! It makes a good one btw! Once I learned about polycarbonate I was on the right path because of the look that could be had and the incredible durability and strength. I was obsessed! We made many more test of various polycarbonates until we found just the right one! 

Then it was just a matter of spending a small fortune to have a multi-cavity injection mold made and go to work having them created at the local injection molding facility. Of course we stopped along the way to have it all patented to protect what had now come to account for almost a years solid work designing the Vac Daddy Wand.
